Dhari Devi

🙏 Religious Significance of Dhari Devi

Dhari Devi is considered the guardian deity of Uttarakhand and the protector of the sacred Char Dham Yatra.

Only the upper half of the idol is worshipped here. The lower half of the idol is worshipped at Kalimath Temple as Goddess Kali.

The temple is also counted among the 108 Shakti Sthals mentioned in the sacred text Srimad Devi Bhagwat.

Devotees believe that Goddess Dhari Devi changes her appearance during the day — as a girl in the morning, a young woman in the afternoon, and an old woman in the evening.

🌊 Dhari Devi and the 2013 Uttarakhand Floods

In June 2013, the original temple structure was removed to facilitate the construction of a 330 MW Alaknanda Hydro Electric Project.

Just hours after the idol was shifted to a temporary platform, Uttarakhand witnessed one of India’s worst natural disasters — the 2013 North India floods.

The devastating floods severely affected Kedarnath Temple and surrounding regions.

Many locals strongly believe that the disaster occurred because the goddess was removed from her “mool sthan” (original place).

After the floods, the temple structure was rebuilt and elevated above the river level to prevent future damage.
