Dhari Devi Temple is a famous Hindu temple located on the banks of the Alaknanda River between Srinagar and Rudraprayag in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.
The temple is situated near Kalyasaur on the Srinagar–Rudraprayag highway and is easily accessible by road.
Religious Significance of Dhari Devi 🙏
First, devotees consider Dhari Devi the guardian deity of Uttarakhand. She protects the sacred Char Dham Yatra for all pilgrims. Furthermore, pilgrims worship only the upper half of the Goddess’s idol at this site.
In contrast, the lower half stays at Kalimath Temple. There, devotees worship it as Goddess Kali. Additionally, the sacred text Srimad Devi Bhagwat counts this temple among the 108 Shakti Sthals. Most importantly, legends state that Goddess Dhari Devi changes her appearance during the day. She appears as a girl in the morning, a young woman in the afternoon, and an old woman in the evening.
Dhari Devi and the 2013 Uttarakhand Floods
However, the temple has a tragic modern history. Specifically, authorities removed the original temple structure in June 2013. They did this to build the 330 MW Alaknanda Hydro Electric Project.
Consequently, just hours after workers shifted the idol, Uttarakhand witnessed a massive disaster. The 2013 North India floods devastated the region and severely affected Kedarnath Temple. Therefore, many locals believe that moving the Goddess caused the calamity.
