Dhari Devi Temple

Dhari Devi a temple located on the banks of the Alaknanda River between Srinagar and Rudraprayag in the Garhwal Region of Uttarakhand, India. The temple is home to the upper half of the idol of the goddess Dhari, while the lower half of the idol is located in Kalimath, where she is worshipped as a manifestation of the Goddess Kali. She is considered to be the guardian deity of Uttarakhand and is revered as the protector of the Char Dham’s. Her shrine is one of 108 Shakti Sthals in India, as numbered by Srimad Devi Bhagwat.

2013 Uttarakhand floods

The original temple of the goddess was demolished on June 16, 2013, to give way to the construction of the 330 MW Alaknanda Hydro Electric Dam built by Alaknanda Hydro Power Company Ltd (AHPCL), a subsidiary of infrastructure major,K.

Incidentally, Hours after the idol was moved, the region faced what would become one of the country’s worst natural disasters since the 2004 tsunami. The 2013 North India floods were caused by a multi-day cloudburst resulting in devastating floods and landslides washing away the entire shrine town and killing hundreds of people.Locals and devotees believe, Uttarakhand had to face the Goddess’ ire as she was shifted from her ‘mool sthan’ (original abode) to make way for a 330 MW hydel project that was left in ruins after the flood. A similar attempt in 1882 by a local king had resulted in a landslide that had flattened Kedarnath.

The new temple is now being constructed at its original location. To facilitate smooth operation of a 330 MW hydropower project being built in the area, the height of the temple was raised so that it stood above the gushing Alaknanda river. On the morning of June 16, 2013, the Dhari Devi shrine was removed and shifted to the concrete platform at a height of about 611 metres from the Alaknanda river so that it didn’t submerge in the river. On the same evening, the devastating flashfloods hit Kedarnath.”

The Valley of Flowers

A profusion of wildflowers – iris, violets, roses, primulas, anemones, potentillas – mark this valley, celebrated all over the world for its lush beauty. A narrow river flows through the valley, now declared a national park. Reached by an easy bridle-path from Govindghat, visitors are no longer allowed to camp within the valley.

The valley had always been known to the local people who avoided getting to this area for fear of fairies, who they believed, would take them away. It was in 1931 that Frank Smythe and Holdsworth stumbled into the valley while returning from their successful Kamet expedition and were “at once transported from a region of solemn austerity to a fairy land of dainty flowers, most of them dwarf but brilliant in colour”. Smythe wrote about the valley and its flowers – “their carpet is a celestial one, breathing innocence and joy to the world overburdened with sophistication and sorrow”. His writing invoked a great interest of the people in this valley, both at home and abroad.

Legends associate this valley area with “Gandhamadan” from where Hanuman of Ramayana collected “Sanjeevani” herb to revive Laksmana. Hanuman had to visit far-flung areas in his search for the life-saving herb, some named after him. He visited Hanuman Chatti near Yamunotri, Hanuman Tibba near Gangotri, Hanuman peak near Nandadevi, Hanuman Chatti near Badrinath and ultimately the valley of flowers or Nanankanan as it is also known as.

The best time to visit the valley is during July and August when innumerable varieties of flowers bloom and present a spectacular sight. The valley itself is 10 kms. long and about 2 kms. wide in conical shape, with the river Pushpavati flowing through it. After one gets down at Govindghat on the main Badrinath highway, it involves a trek of 15 kms. to reach Ghangaria wherefrom a further short trek of 5 kms. leads one to the edge of the valley. The valley ranges between 3352 and 3658 mts. in altitude.

Badarinath Dham is a revered pilgrimage place in Uttarakhand, India, set within the amazing mountains of the Himalayas. It stands at an impressive elevation of 3,133 meters (10,248 feet) above sea level.
The journey to Badarinath is a truly enchanting experience, winding through steep and picturesque mountainous terrain, with captivating curves and cliffs that showcase some of the Earth’s most breathtaking scenery.

Along the route to Badarinath, you’ll encounter several sacred sites, including Deo Prayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag, and Vishnuprayag. Additionally, there’s Pandukeswar, where King Pandu and his queen Madri performed Tapasya (spiritual meditation), and where their sons, the Pandavas, stayed during their pilgrimage to heaven. It’s also the place where Bhima and Hanuman, both sons of Vayu (the wind god), crossed paths.

Badarinath is reputed to be a place where Lord MahaVishnu sat deeply. Legend has it that when Lord Vishnu meditated in the open, Goddess Mahalaxmi transformed into a Badari tree to shield him from the harsh weather conditions. Hence, the name “Badari Narayan” was born.

It depicts Lord Badarinarayan sitting under a Badari tree, accompanied by Kuber, Garuda, Narad, Narayan, and Nar. There is also a separate sanctum for Mahalakshmi nearby.

Behind the main temple of Lord Badarinarayan is the Lakshmi Narsimh temple, with shrines dedicated to Desikacharya and Ramanujachary. One of the natural wonders here is the Taptkund, a hot water spring located on the banks of the ice-cold Alaknanda River. The water temperature in Taptkund is a scorching 55 degrees Celsius, in stark contrast to the region’s typical cold climate, which often hovers around 9-10 degrees Celsius or even below freezing. Pilgrims traditionally take a holy dip in Taptkund before visiting the temple.

Inside the Sanctum, you’ll find the main deity, Lord Badari Narayan, along with Kuber, Narad Rishi, Udhava, and Nar & Narayan.

The temple also houses a shrine for Garuda, the divine vehicle of Lord Narayan, as well as idols of Adi Shankar, Swami Desikan, and Shri Ramanujam.

Visiting Badarinath Dham offers a unique blend of natural beauty and spiritual significance, making it a must-visit destination for pilgrims and nature enthusiasts alike.
